Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy

CEESP, the IUCN Commission on Environmental, Economic and Social Policy, is an inter-disciplinary network of professionals whose mission is to act as a source of advice on the environmental, economic, social and cultural factors that affect natural resources and biological diversity and to provide guidance and support towards effective policies and practices in environmental conservation and sustainable development.

Theme on Culture and Conservation (TCC)

The Theme on Culture and Conservation (TCC) was convened in early 2005 with a core group of members drawn primarily from contributors to the publication of a dedicated volume of Policy Matters, “History, Culture and Conservation”. The membership has expanded over the past 8 years and now includes culturally and nationally diverse members from all areas of the globe.

The main purpose of TCC is to improve knowledge, policy and practice through linking cultural and biological diversity.

Specific objectives are:

  1. To publicise and reinforce the relationship between culture and conservation in conservation, environmental policy, and cultural policy;
  2.  to sustain and strengthen biocultural diversity in the present and future by acknowledging and drawing on diverse forms of knowledge; and,
  3. to recognise and support the linkages between cultural expressions of indigenous and local communities and the environment
